About the race
The Two Oceans Marathon is a road-running weekend in Cape Town built around a 56 km ultramarathon and a 21.1 km half marathon. The organiser bills it as the world's most beautiful marathon, and the programme also includes an 8 km night run and a 4.5 km International Friendship Run.
History
The event was first held in 1970 and has grown into one of the biggest road races in South Africa. Celtic Harriers, the Cape Town running club, describes itself as the founder of the race. It was long run around Easter weekend, and Wikipedia notes that the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The course
Both the ultra and the half start in Newlands and finish at the University of Cape Town. The ultra is a rough circle through Muizenberg and Fish Hoek, over Chapman's Peak to Hout Bay, then up to Constantia Nek and back to the campus. When Chapman's Peak Drive has been closed for construction or rockfalls, the route has gone over Ou Kaapse Weg instead. The half marathon follows Edinburgh Drive on the M3 before turning onto forest roads past Kirstenbosch.
The 2027 edition
In a June 2026 announcement the organiser set out an event week running from Wednesday 31 March to Sunday 4 April 2027. The night run and the friendship run take place midweek, with the half marathon and the ultra on the weekend of 3 and 4 April. Both main races finish on the UCT rugby fields, and the organiser lists a capacity of 21,000 for each.
Cut-offs and entry
The announcement described the entry route for the 2027 races: a window for Blue Number Club members from 15 to 22 July 2026, followed by a ballot on 5 August 2026. The organiser's site carries separate pages for qualification, seeding, cut-off times and the rules, so runners should read those directly before planning a finish time.
Where to watch
The organiser's site has a dedicated spectator points page and a road closures page for each of the main races. Because both races end at UCT, the finish area is the natural meeting point, and the ultra's Hout Bay and Constantia Nek sections pass through well-known Peninsula suburbs.
Weather
April sits between the dry summer and the wetter winter in Cape Town, which Wikipedia describes as having a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, moderately wet winters. Winter cold fronts can bring strong north-westerly winds, so the mix of sun, cloud and wind can vary from one year to the next.
