Why is my route coloured green, yellow, orange and red?

Updated

The colour shows how much the weather slows you on each stretch at your pace. Green is Ideal, yellow A little slower (1% or more), orange Hard (3% or more) and red Very hard (6% or more). It counts the heat and humidity, the cold and the wind at the hour you’ll be there.

The four colours

Colour Level What the weather does on that stretch
Green Ideal Slows you by less than 1%
Yellow A little slower 1% to 3% slower
Orange Hard 3% to 6% slower
Red Very hard 6% slower or more

At 6:00 per km (9:39 per mile), 3% is about 11 seconds a kilometre, or 17 seconds a mile.

What it counts

The same things as the weather cost: heat and humidity together, the cold, and the wind against you or behind you, at your pace, at the hour you’ll reach that stretch. The hills are already in your split times.

A stretch can change colour along the way because the day warms up as you run, or because you turn into the wind.

The bar under the headline

In Map your run, the coloured bar shows how much of your run is at each level, with the share in its key, such as “Ideal 62%”.

Where you’ll see it

  • Map your run: the route on the map and the profile along the bottom.
  • Fly the route: choose Effort under Colour the route by, or switch to Wind or Climb. See Fly the route.
  • Club pages: each club run’s label, from Ideal to Very hard.
  • Following someone live: the course coloured at that runner’s pace. On a race that’s private to them, only the part they’ve run so far.
  • Your share image and the evening-before email, as a picture of the route.

Not the same as heat stress

Heat stress uses the same four colours for Low, Moderate, High and Extreme, but it measures the heat of the place. The route’s colour measures what the weather costs you. A cold, windy day can be orange with Low heat stress. See heat stress levels.
