How does live tracking work on iPhone?

Updated

Open your race in the RunFast app, tap Go live, then Start live tracking, and allow your location While Using the App. Put the phone in your pocket: the Lock Screen shows you’re live, positions are kept when there’s no signal, and it stops at the finish. Don’t swipe RunFast away.

First turn on Live tracking for the race, on runfast.tech or in the app. See turning on live tracking.

Start

  1. Open Runs, open the race and tap Go live.
  2. Check START, YOUR PLAN and FINISH, then tap Start live tracking.
  3. The first time, your iPhone asks to use your location. Choose Allow While Using App. RunFast doesn’t need “Always”.

While you run

  • Put the phone in your pocket. Locking it, going to the Home Screen or opening other apps is fine: tracking carries on.
  • The Lock Screen shows that you’re live, and the blue location indicator shows at the top of the screen.
  • In the app, a bar above the tabs shows “You’re live”, how far you’ve run, and how many positions are waiting for signal, with Pause and Stop.
  • No signal? Your iPhone keeps every position and sends them all when it’s back.

Don’t swipe RunFast away

If you swipe RunFast away in the app switcher, your iPhone stops sending your position. Open RunFast again to carry on.

Stopping

  • Tap Stop. RunFast asks “Stop live tracking?” first: your followers see that you’ve stopped, not that you’ve finished.
  • It stops by itself at the finish, “You’re at the finish. Live tracking has stopped.”, or 3 hours after your planned finish.

If it won’t start

If RunFast says “RunFast needs your location to share it”, open your iPhone’s Settings → RunFast → Location and choose While Using the App. For other messages, see why you can’t go live.

Battery

Your iPhone uses GPS the whole race. Start with a full battery, and on a long race carry a power bank.
