How do I go live on race day?
Updated
Two hours before the gun your phone reminds you, with Go live on the notification. Or open the race in the RunFast app on your iPhone or Android phone, tap Go live, check your start and plan, and tap Start live tracking. Live tracking must be on for that race first. Your phone sends your position every 30 seconds, and it stops by itself at the finish.
You go live from the RunFast app on your phone, on iPhone or Android. runfast.tech doesn’t send your position. The people following you need no app: your link opens in any browser.
Before race day
Turn on Live tracking for the race, on runfast.tech or in the app. See turning on live tracking. A casual run can’t go live.
The reminder on race day
Two hours before the gun, your phone reminds you: “Comrades starts at 05:30”. The notification has a Go live button. Tap it and live tracking starts straight away, with nothing else to tap. Until the gun, the people following you see you at the start. From the gun, they see you running.
If you haven’t gone live, you get a reminder again 30 minutes before the gun, and once more at the gun. Once you’re live, the reminders stop. Allow RunFast’s notifications, so they reach you.
Start
- Sign in to the RunFast app with your RunFast account.
- Open Runs, open the race, and tap Go live.
- Check START (the gun), YOUR PLAN (your pace) and FINISH.
- Tap Start live tracking. The first time, allow RunFast to use your location:
- iPhone: choose Allow While Using App. RunFast doesn’t need “Always”.
- Android: allow location, and notifications, so the app can show that you’re live.
Who can see you comes from the race’s own settings: anyone with your link, and anyone at all if you turned on Findable by anyone for it. See Findable by anyone.
While you run
- Your phone sends your position every 30 seconds. Put it in your pocket: going to the Home Screen or locking the phone is fine.
- No signal? Your phone keeps every position, says how many are waiting, and sends them all when the signal is back. Nothing is lost.
- Pause stops sending, and Resume carries on.
- Stop asks “Stop live tracking?” first. Your followers see where you stopped.
- On iPhone, the Lock Screen shows that you’re live. Don’t swipe RunFast away in the app switcher, or your iPhone stops sending. See live tracking on iPhone.
- On Android, a notification shows that you’re live, with Pause and Stop. Some phones close apps to save battery: see live tracking on Android.
When it stops
- At the finish: “You’re at the finish. Live tracking has stopped.” Your time goes to your followers, and to Past the next day. See Past.
- By itself, 3 hours after your planned finish, if you forget.
Battery
Start with a full battery. On a long race, carry a power bank.
Your privacy
- You’re only live while you’re running, and you can stop any time.
- The positions your phone sends are deleted after 7 days, and never used for anything else.
- On a race that’s private to you, such as one you brought in from Strava, your first and last kilometre never show.
