What does the live map show?

Updated

Each runner you follow is their photo on the map, on a course coloured by how hard the weather makes each stretch. Their card shows how far they’ve run, their pace, when they’ll finish, the heat where they are, and how far ahead or behind their goal they are. A status line says when they were last seen.

It’s the same on a follow link (runfast.tech/f/…), on runfast.tech/live, and on the Live tab in the iPhone and Android apps. Try it on the demo runner.

The map

  • Each runner is their photo, or their initials. Runners close together stack into one, with a count. Zoom in to separate them.
  • The course, coloured by how hard the weather makes each stretch at that runner’s pace, from Ideal to Very hard. See why the route is coloured. On a race that’s private to the runner, you see only the line they’ve run so far, never the planned route.
  • A dashed Goal marker, their ghost: where they’d be now at their goal time, if they set one. See the ghost.

One runner

Tap a runner’s card for their view:

  • PACE NOW: their pace over the last few minutes, against their plan, such as “8 s/km behind plan”.
  • FINISH: when they’ll finish at their plan pace.
  • HEAT HERE: the heat stress where they are, and the feels like.
  • Their goal: such as “4 min ahead of goal”, “45 s behind goal” or “on goal pace”.
  • Fly with and their first name follows them in 3D. Stop following takes them off your list.

Once they’ve finished: TIME, FINISHED and AVERAGE, and their time against their goal, such as “3 min under goal”.

The status line

You see It means
Seen 20 s ago Live: their phone sent a position just now.
No signal since km 31, 6 min ago Probably a dead spot on the course. Their phone keeps every position and sends them all as soon as it’s back.
Paused at km 21.1 They paused their tracking.
Finished in 4:12 They reached the finish.
Stopped sharing at km 30.0 They stopped before the finish.
Starts at 05:30, or Starts in 3 days They haven’t started yet.
Not running right now They’re not live, and have no race coming up with live tracking on.
Near the start or finish: hidden for their privacy On a race that’s private to them, the first and last kilometre never show.

The map updates every 10 seconds while someone’s running. At the top, Live means someone is live now; otherwise it shows when it last updated. Runners who’ve finished or stopped stay on the map for 6 hours.

The heat where they are is worked out by RunFast at each runner’s pace, from Apple Weather.
