How do I make a video of my run and share it?

Updated

On Fly the route on the web, or on a run in the iPhone and Android apps, tap Make the video. Your device flies your run for 26 seconds over satellite imagery, with the heat, the wind and the rating at your pace, and makes an MP4. It goes on a page at livedot.me that plays it, with one link to share in WhatsApp or anywhere.

Make it

On the web, at runfast.tech:

  1. Map your run, then open Fly the route.
  2. Tap Make the video.
  3. Keep the tab open while it records, about a minute on a recent phone or computer. The progress bar shows how far it has got. If you switch away, it pauses until you come back.

In the iPhone and Android apps:

  1. Open a run or a race.
  2. Tap Make the video.
  3. Keep the app open while it records. The screen stays on by itself.

Your own device makes the video, in the apps as on the web. Nothing is uploaded until it’s finished.

What’s in it

The video is 26 seconds, in the upright 9:16 shape that fits WhatsApp Status and Instagram Stories:

  • your run’s name, date, start time, distance and climbing;
  • the flight along the course on satellite imagery, coloured by how hard the weather makes each stretch at your pace;
  • two or three short lines at the right moments, for example “Heat stress moderate from km 42” or “The weather costs about 15 min”;
  • the rating, Good, Fair or Tough, and the reason for it.

The numbers are the same ones Map your run shows. A race day from the past says so: “The weather on race day 2024, from ERA5 records”.

Share it

When it’s finished, the video gets its own page at livedot.me, at an address like livedot.me/v/…. The page plays the video, with your run’s distance, pace, climbing and rating.

  • On the web, the page opens by itself. Share sends the link with a short message, and Save the video keeps the MP4 for Instagram Stories or anywhere else.
  • In the apps, your phone’s share sheet opens straight away, with the link and the message ready for WhatsApp or anywhere else. On iPhone, Save to Photos keeps the MP4 too.

In WhatsApp and most apps, the link shows a large preview with a play button and the numbers.

Share with livedot

Share with livedot is only for you, the person who made the video. It sits in a box marked Only you see this: nobody you share the link with sees it.

  1. On the video’s page, type how you’d like to be credited, your name or your @instagram, if you like.
  2. Tap Share with livedot.

The apps also show Share with livedot next to the video once it’s made.

livedot may feature your video on its socials, with credit to you. Changed your mind? Tap Withdraw on the page, or switch it off in the app.

Good to know

  • Videos are kept for 14 days, then the page says the video has expired, and the link stops playing it. Make a new one any time; the forecast will be fresher too.
  • Private runs: in the apps, the button doesn’t show on private runs, such as Run live recordings and runs brought in from Strava, or on runs without a route.
  • On the web, the video needs a recent browser: Chrome, Edge, or Safari 17 or later. The apps need iOS 16.4 or later, or an up-to-date Android System WebView.
  • You can make up to 6 videos an hour.
  • The page carries RunFast’s thanks to its sponsor. The video itself never does.
